Pure Digital’s Jonathan Kaplan–aka the Flip Guy–Speaks (Post-Cisco)! All Things D Blogs

!

Now, Kaplan has gone and sold Flip off to Cisco (CSCO) for $590 million in stock.

Sources said that Pure Digital–this corporate name will go by the wayside, by the way–had also chittered-chatted with Sony (SNE) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) about such a possibility.

That’s pretty good company for Pure Digital, considering it started as a white-label product, shrink-wrapped for theme parks and drugstores.

But the simplicity of its line of relatively inexpensive cameras, including the recently released Mino (seen below, and also sold in a high-definition version), has made it a huge consumer success, which is no easy task in the devices arena.

With Flip software, a user can plug the unit into a USB port of a computer to upload digital video easily. Flip models cost anywhere from $100 to $299.

Spot-on simplicity and a no-brainer feel have made them into the most popular such devices around, and in a very short time.

What is a digital scanner, is it different from an ordinary scanner?

Oct 09, 2007 by house of jazz | Posted in Scanners

I am filing an online application that needs a digital photo. It say there that if I don't have one, I could scan my photo with a digital scanner. I have a HP scanjet scanner. I know this is a dumb question and I think that flatbed scanners are digital scanners. I am right or wrong. I just want to scan my photo so I have a digital photo, using a digital scanner whatever it is.

Sorry for this very confusing question. Hope someone could help me.

Thanks in advance.

If it scans into a computer, it's a digital scanner. So you are right, your scanner is a digital scanner. If you scan the picture, it will save as an image file on your harddrive. It may even specify where to save it.

An alternative to this is if you have a digital camera. You could hook it up via USB to your computer or by the memory card.

What is the best digital camera brand to buy?

Apr 24, 2007 by Ty | Posted in Cameras

I now own a HP digital camera that works just fine. But before digital came along, I had a Nikon film camera which I just loved. Everytime I see a professional, they are using a Nikon. To me digital can't even compare to film but it's nice to be able to see the pictures before they are developed. I have taken thousands of pictures over the years that are still on my SD cards. Don't get me wrong my digital camera is great and I have developed hundreds of the pictures, but when using digital you just can't stop at one picture.

Asking for an opinion between Nikon or Canon is like asking about religion. Both sides will argue until they fall unconcious. The truth is, both Nikon and Canon make fantastic D-SLR cameras.

If you owned a Nikon film SLR in the past and still have lenses, you already have a start on a Nikon kit. Almost all Nikon "F" mount lenses made will work on current Nikon digital SLR cameras. A recent exception is the Nikon D40 and D40x - they will autofocus only with Nikon "AF-S" lenses.

Canon, on the other hand, is as equally used by professionals as Nikon. They don't have the decades of lens compatibility that Nikon does, but they do have a very developed hypersonic motor focusing system that they have used since the creation of the Canon "EF" lens mount. (Nikon uses their similar "AF-S" technology, but Canon did it first.)

Consider both brands equally and be sure to make your final decision standing in your local camera store with the cameras in your hands. Specifications and test reviews on the Web can only tell you so much. Eventually, you have to TRY the cameras and discover which one is for you.

How will using a non-digital lens with a digital body change the quality?

Mar 04, 2008 by MitchelAH | Posted in Cameras

I have older Vivitar lens that I'd like to use with my new digital SLR Canon EOS xTi camera. I will be trying to mount using a t-adapter. These are nice lenses that have been taken care of but will the quality be different if I don't use a digital lens for my digital SLR?

There is no difference between a digital or "non-digital" lens, design wise. Nothing has been done to the glass or element design. The real differences have to do with the size of the image projected to the film or sensor. The "film" camera has to cover the whole of a 36x24mm frame, with no distortion, focus or colour. Most "digital" cameras only have to cover the smaller APS-C, 23.7 x 15.7 mm frame ... so using a lens designed for the larger format will work fine on a DSLR, but if you try the reverse, your 36x24mm frame will experience some vignetting.

Your manual focus lens probably not have the necessary components to allow you to use your XTi's sophisticated light meter

Best digital camera for a student photographer?

Feb 24, 2008 by ツ | Posted in Cameras

I am currently a student in high school, and I am very interested in digital photography. I do not have a lot of experience with purchasing cameras, and I am looking for a digital camera that has great features, easy to use functions, and is durable. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

SLR is good but $$$ even the inexpensive ones are $500+.

A good point and shoot that has full manual shooting capability will be $250+ and it is the minimum I would recommend for someone who thinks they might get serious about shooting since even if you upgrade later on, you can still learn how to take pictures by using the full manual mode.

Then IF you decide to upgrade to a true SLR/DSLR, you can always use the P&S as a pocket camera while the DSLR/SLR can become your serious shooter.

On the other hand if you decide that Photography is not your thing, it hasn't cost you alot to figure that out.

HTH.

What digital camera would you suggest to buy?

Mar 29, 2008 by keekster | Posted in Cameras

My cousin and I really don't know anything about buying a good digital camera. My cousin needs one and she said she's willing to pay up to $300 for a camera. She wants one that has a rechargeable battery. If you have any good suggestions about what digital camera to purchase please let me know your opinion and where could we find it brand new with a good value.
Ohh i forgot to put that she needed a waterproof digital camera because we're going to Philippines and take the camera to beaches. What's a good waterproof camera?

The samsung cameras are really good. I had one which was digimax S500 and I took really good pictures, but I took it to Mexico on a mission trip and it got wet so it stopped working. I bought the latest version which was the digimax S630 in green, but the screen broke. I have an HP camera now and I dont really like it, my mom has a digimax S630 in silver and Im always taking it. They are like $100 but they take 2 AA batts, I have the energizer rechargable though. But for like $150 I think they have some that have the recharable battery. I really like those cameras, I've had plenty of cameras and that one has great quality, you can also choose the option when taking a pic that it flashes twice so you cant blink. I took pictures last year at prom a couple months before it got wet in Mexico and I got them printed out at Costco and they looked great. I really love those cameras, I hope I can get the screen on my green one fixed before I go on my trip to Sydney this July.
